“Sometime last year we discovered several dozen of these things in the bushes beside our house. Normally I try to stay away from any sort of bug, but these guys were just too adorable to avoid. I’m still curious as to what they were, though. Could you help?”-Zawmbie
This is some species of Wooly Bear- the caterpillar of Tiger Moths. Perhaps someone may know it more specifically. I just found a black Wooly Bear in my garage, as well. I shall post pictures shortly.

Hi! I do. I have a pair of Eastern Hercules Beetles, an African Mantis, a Black Widow, a Double Shield Mantis, three Stick Bugs and a moth cocoon that I keep forgetting to take out of the fridge to emerge in spring. Kenny (my live in boyfriend) has limits to the types and number of bugs I can keep so he keeps me from getting out of control with my pets!

Hi again! Yup this is a harmless Conifer Seed Bug, or close relative as evidence of the little flags on the back legs. They often seek warmth indoors. I’d be very surprised if this is what bit you. Are you sure you’re not having allergic reactions to new detergent or something? Often times, “bites” are not bites at all and people assume they’ve found the culprit when they find a six-legged intruder.
“It is funny to me that people a.) ever feel such vehement hatred or “disgust” by insects… all insects, ANY insects (and spiders/centi’s/milli’s sorry Andrea I forget which are separate from Insecta!). To me, there are certainly evolutionary factors to fear of snakes. They are poisonous! They CAN kill you. I mean, some can, I’m not afraid of snakes, I love them. But, I’m willing to give you scaredy cat’s the benefit of the doubt here. however, with insects… we really should only be afraid of specific, rare small spiders, and certain types of wasps. I consider fear of ALL AND ANY BUGS!!! to be a success of modern society. Which I think is pretty unnatural, personally. Moms and dads in my opinion don’t need to raise their kids telling them “bugs are icky, gross, dangerous, bad”. it’s a choice made because of ignorance and judgemental parents that are uninformed and don’t think to help their kids out by NOT passing this on to the next generation. We all should have been raised being told ants are the organism with the HIGHEST BIOMASS IN THE WORLD— simply amazing! You think 6 billion humanns weigh a lot? Well the mass of ants globally is way, way heavier. Bees are the only reason our system of agriculture (also an invention of humanity!!! but i will leave this aside) has even succeeded. Hundreds of billions of dollars annually in the food industry is completely owed to our beautiful cute buzzin’ little honeybees for dutifully doing their jobs, and yet so many people will run, scream, or KILL on sight, instead of observing with wonder and appreciation. I don’t get this— culture can talk us into a lot of idiotic shit. Breast implants, absurd clothes as fashion, high-rise living… but killing an organism on sight just because your mom or dad impressed upon you without reason that they are bad, or dangerous? That is pretty ignorant shit, man. READ A BOOK.”-frezhmermaidmeat

These are AMAZING. They are some of the coolest bug pieces I’ve seen in a long time! I especially love the stag beetles and rhino beetles- even the little fly is cool! Thank you for sharing them!
