hypoprepia asked: I figured I would send you a message since I'm limited with an answer textbox: In regards to the recently posted unknown insect, its definitely some sort of treehopper nymph. It may be difficult to tell what species without knowing the geographic location and plant it was found near or on! Especially because even their instars vary quite a bit. This one could be a late instar, perhaps fourth...

Sexing mantids
“This is in response to your recent post where you said you weren’t sure what sex your mantis is. (Sorry about that bad shed, BTW)   Besides counting the abdominal segments, you can also look at the shape of the abdomen.  In a female, the abdomen will be very broad, tapering to a kind of bulb-shaped tip.  The male has a thin, straight abdomen with what looks like a tiny shovel or...

animalplanet: i’m going to be downsizing my bug collection because i want to focus mainly on arachnids/mantids/phasmids/myriapods. i have some species of some really neato roaches and one of the longest US millipedes (she’s about 4-5 inches long right now!) up for sale for anyone who’s interested. they’re… More bugs for sale..

Bugs and bats!
“Hi Buggirl! Your blog is one of my favorites on tumblr. I love how much you care about our invertebrate friends! I work as a field technician doing surveys for endangered bats, and I see a TON of really cool insects. I made friends with what I believe to be a female Eastern Hercules Beetle. I thought you might like to see her! She was caught in our bat net and I carefully removed her. She...

Thank you!! :)
“Thank you so much, Ms. Andrea! My mom and I really were happy to know what she was! Also, my sister would like to add that she found her first, and that apparently Señorita Araña has been living with for two whole years!  I guess I hadn’t realized how fast time had gone by. She also named her, Bathroom Spider, and didn’t realize I had given her name of her own. (I thought...

pragmatichominid: Creobroter pictipennis mantis with starter kit. What comes with the kit: One “baby” (nymph) C. pictipennis mantis (pictured above is an adult female). One insect cup with vented lid and substrate, large enough to house an adult mantis. One flightless fruit fly culture, which will… Reblog for tothedarktower.  I’d buy some but I’m taking a mantid...

Hey! We found this little caterpillar muching on...
-Nbabble I’m having a hard time with this one because I had no idea where to start.  The closest I’ve found is the Yellow Striped Caterpillar Moth, Trichordestra legitima, but I’m not entirely convinced. Here is the one I found on bugguide.  If anyone has suggestions, let us know!  It has already entered the cocoon stage so perhaps we shall get an ID after it emerges.

faithies-world asked: So I was outside one morning when I found this REALLY cute little spider! It was all black with about 3 or 4 white dots. Ever since then I find them everywhere!! I decided to let them inside my house and eat all of the little annoying little bugs. (sorry but they are constantly around and they are REALLY annoying!) I find them around everywhere each spider has different colored dots. Would you...

Anonymous asked: I've seen this really tiny jumping spider in my room about three times now and I'm pretty sure it's the same spider every time, she either lives somewhere under my bed or around my window, I really like having her around but I'm thinking about taking her out of my room because I don't want to risk my mom or anyone killing her just because they don't like spiders,...

Señorita Araña
“Hello! :) My name is Kali and Señorita Araña is the spider in my bathroom. As you can see, her web is so big because she’s lived there for a little while (at least half a year and we never threw her out, because we grew to like her and couldn’t reach her to put her in a cup and take her outside). I gave her that name (I had been taking Spanish at that time, and I knew she was a girl,...
