“I’m guessing that this is just a regular ol’ huntsman spider of some kind, but my brother found this baby in his bathroom and raised all hell over skype. He recently moved to Australia and I’m on the other side of the world, but I managed to prod him into taking a picture and letting it go in the garden. He wants reassurance that it’s not going to kill him if he sees it again, because he’s kind of paranoid about the creepy crawlies there and he keeps finding things in his bath :C Is this enough to tell if I’m right…?”- xtynn
I agree that this is indeed a Huntsman, aka Giant Crab Spider.  I lack the skills to further identify it but I’ll take a stab at a Holconia sp. Here is a nice site with many examples of Huntsman spiders found in Australia.  Huntsman Spiders are not considered dangerous to humans, and are barely aggressive, most bites happen by accident or are the result of mishandling.  Females may protect egg sacs from perceived threats but bites are of little to no medical significance and under most circumstances do not require medical attention.  So tell your brother great work on releasing it into his garden as this spider will be happy to rid the perimeter of his home of cockroaches.
